The Ollerton & Bevercotes Club History

The society was formed in 1974 by a group of local fanciers, many were miners from the two local colliery's - Ollerton and Bevercotes , hence the society's name.

The clubs first president was Mr Henry Waby a local printer. Other founder members included Dennis White, John Callaghan, Phil White, Geoff Thomas, Eddie Yates, John Jarvis, George Day, John Newton, Noel Gozzard, Lee Gozzard, John Boyles and Bill Pike.

Former member Les Rodgers had the distinction of winning Best in Show at The National Exhibition in the 80s with a British Hybrid.

The record entry of birds at an open show is over 1000, these days between 400-500 is the norm.

Another sign of the society's past ties with the mining industry can be seen on some of club trophies, examples being The Ollerton Branch NACODS shield, The Bevercotes UDM Trophy and The Ollerton NUM cup to name but a few.

Various venues have been used for shows they started at The Old Welfare Annexe, then was The New Welfare, the next venue was the long gone Mission Hall and now at the present time, we use The Jubilee Hall on Wellow Road.

The club logo was designed and donated to us by the late Roy Stringer in the millennium year 2000.

In this current year 2017, the club has reduced in size like most clubs nowadays and we have approximately 35 members, roughly split between 25 Budgerigar fanciers and 10 Canary, British and Foreign. We usually run 4 shows during each year, the months shown are approximate;

  • Budgerigar Barhead Show, usually in May

  • Young Stock Show in July

  • Open Show in October

  • Members Show in November

You can find exact dates for the current year on the Show Dates tab on the top bar - or just use this quick link     show-dates.php

The club meets once per calendar month, usually 20.00 hrs on 1st Monday of each month, however some days have to change which is out of our control. The venue is at Ollerton House Hotel, Wellow Road, Ollerton Village, NG22 9AP, you'll find the meeting dates on the "Meetings" tab on the top bar - or use this link to get there from here -  meetings.php
